Preparation Guide for Recording
Reading time: approx. 5 minutes
Studio time is a finite resource. Especially for vocal recording, technical preparation, physical condition, and mental readiness significantly influence the final audio quality. This guide outlines the specific steps Berungrid engineers recommend taking before your session date to ensure a productive workflow.
1. Song Structure and Thorough Rehearsal
Before pressing the record button, it is essential to have a complete grasp of the song's structure. Deciding on melody timing, breath positions, and emotional dynamics in advance prevents hesitation during the session, which can consume valuable studio time.
If your track includes complex phrases or high registers, we recommend practicing at home until the approach is consistent. If you have a guide vocal, listen to it repeatedly and develop a clear plan for your own interpretation. This allows the engineer to focus on the technical capture rather than structural trial-and-error.
2. Physical Condition Management
For a singer, the throat is the instrument. To maintain a consistent performance throughout the session, consider the following guidelines:
- Hydration: Drink water consistently in the days leading up to the session to keep the vocal folds hydrated. Rapid hydration on the day of recording has limited effectiveness.
- Dietary Awareness: Excessive dairy products or highly sugary drinks can create mucus in the throat, which may hinder the clarity of high frequencies.
- Rest: Fatigue reduces the ability to control the vocal cords precisely. Ensure adequate sleep the night before to arrive at the studio relaxed and focused.
3. Technical Preparation and File Organization
To maintain an efficient session, ensure your backing tracks are ready. We recommend providing files in high-quality WAV format (44.1kHz/24-bit or higher). While compressed files like MP3 are supported, they may affect the quality during the mixing stage.
Additionally, have the exact tempo (BPM) documented. Being prepared to record to a click track (metronome) simplifies the subsequent editing process and helps in meeting delivery deadlines. Please bring your files on a USB drive or provide a reliable cloud download link before your arrival.
Preparation Checklist
| Item | Verification | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Backing Tracks | WAV format saved on USB or cloud | □ |
| Lyrics & Structure | Latest version printed or digital | □ |
| Vocal Condition | Hydrated and well-rested | □ |
| Rehearsal | Breath positions and phrasing practiced | □ |
4. Mental Approach and Mindset
Recording sessions can be stressful. However, excessive tension can tighten the throat and obstruct natural expression. Before entering the booth, we suggest light stretching and deep breathing to relax the body and mind.
The engineer acts as a partner to help you achieve a professional take. If you have specific concerns or particular sections you wish to emphasize, please communicate them clearly. Open communication leads to reaching the desired take more quickly.
5. Scheduling in the Minatomirai Area
Berungrid is located on Minatomirai-dori in the Nishi-ward of Yokohama. We recommend planning your arrival to include the walk from Minatomirai Station. Especially on weekends, the surrounding area can be crowded, so arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled time is advised.
There are quiet cafes and parks near the studio. Taking a moment to warm up your voice and center your focus before the session begins helps in transitioning smoothly into the recording process.
6. Post-Recording Workflow
After the recording is complete, consider how you wish to receive your data and whether you require mixing services. Our studio provides multi-track exports and high-resolution WAV delivery.
